What is a derailleur hanger? I hear you ask. A derailleur hanger is designed to protect the frame of your bike; it is built to either snap or bend to prevent any damage being done to the main body of the bike. Derailleur hangers are also known as rear mech hangers, mech hangers, dropout mech, dropout hanger or a cast hanger. Carrying a spare rear mech hanger has its benefits, as you do not know when the one fitted onto your frame will snap or bend. Carrying a spare mech hanger will allow you to change it over and continue cycling, instead of ordering and having to wait for your replacement derailleur hanger to arrive.
