Derailleur hangers are the least attractive thing to go on a bike and we never really think of stocking up on them until they break, but it protects the frame of your bike. They have many names such as mech hangers, mech dropouts, cast hangers, mountain bike hangers and hanger dropout (the list is endless). Each mech hanger is designed to either bend or snap, to prevent any damage being done to the main body. It is always recommended to carry a spare rear mech hanger as they can bend or snap at any given time. Once snapped, the bike can’t be ridden otherwise you’ll cause more damage to the bike.
