Potholes vs. Cyclists

Roadworks seem to be a part of everyday British life. Whether you’re a driver or cyclist, potholes are a common encounter for all road users. The only difference is that it is a lot more dangerous for a cyclist to stumble after hitting a pothole than it is for somebody behind the wheel of a large vehicle. But what can we do about it? The Problem of Potholes If you usually stick to forest trails and haven’t commuted in a while, you might think talk of potholes is hyperbole. Especially when you consider how much press the cycle-friendly roads of 2020 had and the surge in the number of new cyclists that followed suit. Unfortunately, though, it is still a real problem facing UK cyclists today. It was only in January of this year that two cyclists suffered serious accidents when they hit the same pothole consecutively, with injuries ranging from a concussion to a broken wrist. Simply put, a lot of Britain’s roads are not as safe for cyclists as they should be. This is in juxtaposition to the government’s plea for more road users to be made up of the eco-friendly pass-time that cycling can be categorised as. Protective Bike Components Since lobbying the government to improve roads for cyclists is a lengthy process, you must take good care of your bike to ensure you are giving yourself the best chance of enjoying a trouble-free cycling experience. Since UK weather is often wet, lots of potholes are obscured by puddles so they are not often easy to see. As cyclists have to follow the Highway Code, there is already so much to do and consider as a cyclist out on the roads. By having the right components in place and encouraging governmental action, you put yourself in a good position to make a change for the better.
