MTB Toolkit Checklist: What to Pack Before Every Ride
Every mountain biker knows that the trails can be unpredictable: a mechanical issue miles from home can turn a great ride into a long walk. That’s why carrying the right toolkit is essential for staying safe, self-sufficient, and ready for whatever the trail throws at you. Here’s a guide to what every rider should pack before heading out.
1. Multi-Tool and Chain Tool
A good multi-tool is the cornerstone of any mountain bike repair kit. Choose one that includes a full range of Allen keys, Torx wrenches, and screwdrivers so you can adjust everything from brake levers to seat posts. A built-in chain tool is particularly useful, allowing you to repair a broken chain quickly and efficiently without needing extra equipment.
2. Spare Inner Tube and Tyre Levers
Even riders who use tubeless setups can suffer punctures that sealant can’t fix. Carry a spare inner tube, a reliable pair of tyre levers, and a puncture repair kit. A mini pump or a few CO₂ cartridges will make inflating your tyre quick and hassle-free, helping you get back on the trail in minutes.
3. Derailleur Hanger
A spare derailleur hanger might be the most important, and most overlooked, item in your toolkit. These small components are designed to bend or break in a crash to protect your frame, but that means they can leave you stranded if you don’t have a replacement. Carrying a spare hanger that fits your specific bike ensures you can repair your drivetrain and keep riding instead of walking home.
4. Chain Link, Bolts, and Small Fixes
Pack a quick link or master link for on-the-go chain repairs, along with a few spare bolts for your bottle cage, chainring, or brake rotors. A handful of zip ties and a bit of duct tape can also come in handy for temporary fixes.
5. Mini Pump & Tyre Pressure Gauge
Proper tyre pressure affects grip, comfort, and puncture resistance. A reliable mini pump and gauge help keep everything dialled in.
6. Zip Ties, Tape, and Small Tools
A few zip ties, duct tape, and a small piece of chainstay protector material can help with quick fixes and cable management.
