How to Replace Worn-Out Pivot Bearings

How to Replace Worn-Out Pivot Bearings

Pivot bearings are crucial to the smooth performance of your full-suspension mountain bike. Over time, these bearings can wear out due to dirt, water ingress, and general use, leading to creaks, stiffness, or poor suspension performance. Replacing worn-out pivot bearings isn’t as daunting as it may initially sound; with the right tools and steps, you can get your bike back to its best.

Step 1: Identify the Issue
If your rear suspension feels rough or you're hearing creaking or grinding noises, it could be time to check your pivot bearings. Gently move the rear triangle to feel for play or resistance. Visual signs of corrosion or dirt build-up around the bearings are also strong indicators.

Step 2: Disassemble the Linkage
Using appropriate Allen keys and tools, remove the bolts securing your linkage. Keep track of the hardware and spacers as you disassemble. Take photos if necessary to help with reassembly.

Step 3: Remove the Old Bearings
Use a bearing removal tool to press out the old bearings gently. If they’re stuck, apply a light amount of penetrating oil and give it time to work. Avoid hammering bearings out, as this can damage the frame or linkage.

Step 4: Clean and Inspect
Before installing new bearings, thoroughly clean the bearing seats and inspect them for wear or damage. If the area is worn, it’s worth consulting a bike mechanic to avoid long-term issues.

Step 5: Install New Bearings
Using a bearing press tool, carefully press in your new pivot bearings. Make sure they sit flush in the frame or linkage. It may also help to apply a bit of waterproof grease to help with future removal and reduce corrosion.

Step 6: Reassemble and Test
Reassemble the linkage using your photos as a guide. Tighten bolts to manufacturer torque specs, and test the suspension for smooth movement.
