How to Properly Install a Derailleur Hanger

A derailleur hanger might be one of the smallest parts on your bike, but it plays a big role in keeping your gears running smoothly. It acts as a critical link between your frame and rear derailleur, and is designed to take the hit in a crash, by bending or breaking to protect more expensive components. Whether you're upgrading, replacing a damaged hanger, or fine-tuning your drivetrain, proper installation is key to performance and longevity. Here's how to do it right.

Step 1: Identify the Correct Hanger
Derailleur hangers are not universal. Each frame often requires a specific design, so be sure to choose a hanger that matches your bike’s make and model. At BETD, we offer a wide range of precision-engineered hangers compatible with most major bike brands. If you’re unsure which hangers is right for your bike, speak to our expert team who will be happy to help.

Step 2: Remove the Rear Wheel & Derailleur
Before installation, shift the chain onto the smallest rear cog, then remove the rear wheel. Unscrew and remove the existing derailleur from the hanger using a 5mm Allen key. Keep the derailleur safe; there’s no need to disconnect the chain.

Step 3: Remove the Old Hanger
Using the correct tool or Allen key, unscrew the old derailleur hanger from the dropout. Clean the area thoroughly, removing any dirt, debris, or old thread-locking compound.

Step 4: Install the New Hanger
Align the new derailleur hanger precisely with the dropout. Secure it using the appropriate screws or bolts, tightening them evenly and to the manufacturer’s torque specifications. A misaligned hanger can lead to poor shifting or even damage your derailleur.

Step 5: Reattach Derailleur and Wheel
Reinstall the rear derailleur onto the new hanger and reattach the rear wheel. Shift through all gears to ensure smooth and accurate transitions. Use a derailleur hanger alignment tool if needed for fine adjustments.
