Essential Gear Every Trail Rider Should Carry

Trail riding is all about freedom, flow, and exploring new terrain; but even the best rides can be cut short by unexpected mechanical issues or changes in conditions. Carrying the right essential gear helps you stay prepared, ride confidently, and handle most problems without relying on outside help.

·       Multi-Tool and Chain Tool

A quality multi-tool is the backbone of any trail kit. Look for one with Allen keys, Torx bits, and screwdrivers to cover common adjustments. A built-in chain tool is especially important, allowing you to repair a broken chain quickly and get back on the trail.

·       Spare Inner Tube and Tyre Repair Kit

Even tubeless setups aren’t immune to punctures. A spare inner tube, tyre levers, and a tubeless plug kit should always be in your pack. Pair these with a compact hand pump or CO₂ inflator so you can reinflate tyres efficiently.

·       Derailleur Hanger & Spare Hardware

A spare derailleur hanger is one of the smartest items a trail rider can carry. These components are designed to fail in a crash to protect your frame, and having a replacement can save your ride. A few spare bolts for chainrings, bottle cages, or brake rotors can also prevent small issues from becoming big problems.

·       Mini First Aid Kit & Essentials

Minor injuries happen on the trail, so a small first aid kit with plasters, wipes, and bandages is invaluable. Add a phone, ID, some cash, and a lightweight emergency layer for changing weather conditions.

·       Nutrition and Hydration

Energy bars, gels, or snacks keep you fuelled, while a hydration pack or bottle ensures you stay hydrated on longer rides. Bonking mid-ride is avoidable with proper preparation.
