Cycling Review: Paris Olympics 2024

The Paris 2024 Olympics showcased some of the most thrilling cycling events in recent years, capturing the attention of fans worldwide. From the rainy and challenging road races that wound through the historic streets of Paris to the intense track events at the newly built velodrome, the competition was fierce and exhilarating. Road Cycling Drama In the road cycling events, riders faced a technically demanding course that included sharp climbs, cobblestone streets, and fast descents. Coupled with the wet weather of the opening weekend, there was also plenty of drama and crashes in the women’s time trial event, with Australia’s Grace Brown coming through to take the gold. There were more unforgettable moments over in the men’s race, which ended in Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel taking gold, before also claiming the road race title 7 days later despite suffering a dramatic puncture as he neared the end of the race. Records Smashed in Track Cycling On the track, the velodrome events did not disappoint. From the electrifying sprint races to the endurance-testing Madison, the competition was intense. Fans witnessed five world records being broken, and new champions emerging in the form of Emma Finucane, making history as the first British woman since 1964 to win three medals in one Games. Dutch cyclist Harrie Lavreysen returned with a hattrick of golds, with dominating performances in the sprint, team sprint and Keirin to solidify his legacy in Olympic history. Last Minute Mountain Biking Glory Mountain biking, held in the stunning terrain outside Paris, also provided a spectacle with its blend of speed, skill, and technical prowess. The course was a true test of the riders' abilities, featuring steep climbs, tricky descents, and intense heat that challenged even the best. The cross-country event highlighted the versatility and resilience of these athletes as they navigated the rugged terrain, with Team GB's Tom Pidcock defying a puncture to retain his Olympic title in incredible fashion. The world champion was behind by as much as 40 seconds at one point, before edging out Frenchman Victor Koretzky in the final moments – much to the dismay of the Parisian crowds.
