What a Derailleur Hanger Actually Does

In a crash or impact, it's designed to bend or snap before the derailleur or frame takes the damage. On the Trail

Drop your bike on a rocky descent, clip a tree root, or tip over at a technical section, and the hanger is often the first casualty. A bent hanger throws gear indexing off immediately, making shifting erratic or impossible. In some cases, the derailleur pulls into the wheel, which can cause a far more serious mechanical.
