What Causes Premature Bearing Failure?
Bearings are built to last, but the conditions mountain bikes operate in can shorten their lifespan considerably. Mud, water, heavy loads, and poor maintenance all take their toll. Understanding what causes premature failure helps you get more life out of your components and spot problems before they become expensive ones.
Water and Contamination
Water ingress is the most common cause of early bearing failure. Once moisture gets past the seals, it breaks down the grease inside and accelerates corrosion on the races and balls. Riding in wet conditions regularly, pressure washing directly at bearing points, or leaving a bike stored damp all contribute. Even small amounts of contamination can cause a bearing to degrade far quicker than it should.
Incorrect Installation
A bearing that hasn't been pressed in squarely sits under uneven load from the moment it's fitted. This causes one side to wear faster than the other, leading to roughness, play, and early failure. Using the wrong tools or forcing a bearing into an undersized shell can also damage the outer race before it's even been ridden on.
Preload and Adjustment
Too much preload puts constant pressure on the bearing even when the bike is stationary. Too little allows movement that causes the races to wear unevenly. Both are easy mistakes to make during assembly, and both significantly reduce bearing lifespan. Getting preload right at installation is one of the most important steps in making bearings last.
Neglected Maintenance
Bearings need periodic inspection and regreasing, particularly on a bike that sees heavy use or wet riding. Running a bearing until it feels rough or develops play means it has already been damaged. Catching wear early and repacking or replacing bearings before they fail completely protects the surrounding components from taking unnecessary stress.
