Bike Wheels and Winter Weather

Bike Wheels and Winter Weather

You’re a seasoned cyclist who is aware of how the seasons affect your bike, but sometimes you need to go back to basics. Once you have covered the essentials of winter cycling that pertain to your warmth and essential bike components such as derailleur hangers and bike bearings, you will need to take a look at your bike tyres.

Don’t Tire of your Tyres

The weather is becoming increasingly erratic and to the dismay of some, fraught with rain. Particularly pertinent for those living in the North or middle of England – with the South experiencing more rain too. A deep tread on a tyre will aid the tyre in squeezing water out to get rid of the excess rain so check for tyres with this feature. A puncture is never desired, but particularly not in adverse weather conditions, where staying in motion is the central component of keeping you warm. For this reason, you might want to look for a protective sheet underneath the tread as it will provide a buffer against bits of debris, sharp objects and more threats to your bike’s health while you’re out on or off the roads. Lots of tyres have a dual compound – comprising of both hard and soft, with a medium level of grip.

If you are reflecting on bike rides gone by in similarly adverse weather conditions, only to realise you made your components check too simple by only replacing the derailleur hangers for maximum bike protection, you might want to shop around for new tyres. Choose the best tyres for your purposes by thinking ahead and trying to plan your rides as much as you can in advance.

If you try out new bike tyres this winter, we still recommend continuing to carry spare derailleur hangers with you as the terrain will be harsher and your bike still needs protection. But look at your wheels in wintertime before you head out in the possible snow…
