Pro Cycling Tips

If you are constantly looking for ways to become a better cyclist and want to learn from the experts, it pays not to do the same thing repeatedly and expect a different result. While that might be a loose reference to a quote by Einstein, the tips we will be sharing today come from more modern figures who are consistently getting results out on their bike. From mtb parts to gravel bike bearings and beyond, we know what we are talking about when it comes to bikes.

Ride in Different Formats

Ultimately, you want to ride as much as possible. If you have been an avid road cyclist for years and have already familiarised yourself with the fitness levels and skills this format provides for you, why not invest in a gravel bike. The techniques and skills you can develop on a gravel bike differ to a mountain bike, BMX and so on. Keep your cycling skills sharp: several World Tour cyclists come from a MTB youth and cyclocross background – there is no benefit to any superiority ideas around different forms of cycling.

Be in the Draft

Ride directly behind someone in a group in order to create the ‘slipstream’ effect. Not only does it produce a lot of feel-good endorphins, but it also makes riding easier and frankly feels like tonnes of fun. Plus, it’s a good skill to master if you’ve never done it before. There are many group rides around the country that often welcome new attendees and range from an easy-going to challenging skill level. Avoid the rookie mistake of staring at the wheel of the cyclist in front of you and instead always keep your eyes on the road ahead – the natural formation will form the more you practice. Perhaps practice with a few friends first before getting involved with larger races.

Track your RPMs

Use your cycling computer to track your cadence, and if you don’t have one yet, invest! Look at it during your ride to see the rate at which you are spinning. Aim for a cadence of 85-95 rpm while maintaining a smooth pedal stroke, so you know when to shift down or up. The more you practice aiming for this, the more it will come to you naturally and you will become a better cyclist.
